Pacific Northwest Adventure Itinerary

Hike in North Cascades National Park

For three days, hike through a national park with more glaciers than anywhere else in the United States, framed by gigantic Fraser fir trees, turquoise lakes, and cascading rivers. (But don’t worry, you won’t be hiking on ice and snow! Pleasant temperatures await.) This lush landscape offers multiple opportunities to marvel at its biodiversity—with a little bit of luck, you might even spot a few sunbathing marmots, mule or black-tailed deer, and mountain goats scrambling up rock faces!

Sea kayak in Deception Pass

Immerse yourself in nature as you sea kayak for three days (camping on islands) around Deception Pass, whose protected waters lend themselves to a huge variety of wildlife like seals, eagles, porpoises, otters, great blue herons, and bald eagles. There’s also a ton of bioluminescence in the summer, too! Huge, old-growth trees line the craggy cliffs, above hollowed out coves where crabs love to skitter about. We may get to paddle to and explore a decommissioned military fort on an island.

Hike in Olympic National Park

Discover one of the world’s wildest and most stunning beach hikes in Olympic National Park. Over four days, you’ll spot bald eagles, otters, sea lions, and seals while hiking with the Pacific Ocean on one side, and sheer cliffs on the other. Camp on the beautiful coast and watch the most colorful sunset you’ve ever seen, surrounded by your new best friends, impressive sea stacks, and starry skies.

Climb Mt. St. Helens (8,365 feet)

The most famous volcano in the United States beckons to student hikers all of levels. After scrambling up the iconic Monitor Ridge, students will stand on the edge of the ever-growing crater and its surrounding glacier, literally watching geology in the making. Rewards for this challenging hike also include 360-degree views of Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams, and Mt. Hood.

Rock climb in Columbia River Gorge

Rope up for a day of rock climbing in Columbia River Gorge, where we’ll ascend blocky basalt columns with a tremendous variety of routes for different skill levels. At the top, turn around for incredible views of the gorge!

Whitewater raft the White Salmon River

Ranked as a top place to visit worldwide by the New York Times, the White Salmon River is a must-experience adventure! This Wild and Scenic River is federally protected, ensuring pristine water and forestry. Get ready for two days of exhilarating rides as you and your friends tackle fun, sustained rapids—teamwork is a must, and laughter is guaranteed.

Camping

About two-thirds of our nights are spent at “frontcountry” campsites, where we’ll generally have a more developed campsite with running water, toilets, and sometimes cell phone service. This may be a public or private campground. We often stay at the same frontcountry site a few days in a row.

The other third will be spent “backcountry” camping, referring to wilderness locations where we are most likely out of cell phone service and away from our vehicles, electricity, and other amenities. Multi-day activities like backpacking and canoeing take place in the backcountry.

Challenge/fitness level

No experience necessary; all skill levels welcome! We’ll teach students everything they need to know to be successful and have lots of fun.

Fitness and physical challenge are subjective, so Adventure Treks does not “rate” its trips based on challenge. However, because we’ll be engaged in different outdoor activities throughout each trip, our students have the responsibility to be physically fit. We know physical fitness looks different for everyone, but it’s important to come prepared so that you and your fellow students can succeed. One student not coming prepared with physical fitness will negatively impact the entire group. In the months leading up to their trip, students should develop a routine that emphasizes stamina and sustaining a moderate level of exertion for many hours, several days in a row. Running, swimming, bicycling, aerobics classes, and team sports are all beneficial and will help improve cardiovascular fitness in preparation for a student’s trip.

Joey’s Adventure Treks experience was truly transformative. As a shy and introverted teen who often doesn’t get the opportunity to show leadership but yearns for challenges that push him out of his comfort zone, Adventure Treks was the perfect fit for him. From the moment we enrolled, the exceptional communication and support from the Adventure Treks team reassured us that Joey was in good hands. Despite his initial nervousness and anxiety about keeping up with his group or lacking the strength and endurance for the activities, Joey embraced the adventure wholeheartedly. The highly skilled instructors provided a safe, fun, and nurturing environment, enabling Joey to try new things and be challenged in ways he hadn’t anticipated. They brought a sense of playfulness and joy to every activity, which made Joey feel like he could always succeed. He formed deep connections with his peers and returned home with newfound confidence, self-sufficiency, and optimism—and asking to do it again! The program’s focus on resilience, leadership, and community fostered remarkable personal growth. Joey’s experience at Adventure Treks exceeded our expectations in every way, and we wholeheartedly recommend it to any parent looking for a life-changing experience for their child.

We sent our son on a 13-day trip with Adventure Treks. Our son canoed, backpacked, hiked and whitewater rafted. He’s always liked these kinds of activities with us, but the experience was made so much more special by the AT instructors and the other kids on his trip. He gained real confidence. And most important to me, he gained an appreciation for having a positive mental outlook. This is an experience he will always remember.

Adventure Treks is the absolute best outdoor program, where a kid can learn, be challenged, grow as a community member, and even become a leader. I know the program well; the organization and programming are great but most of all the instructors are the best!

This is the kind of experience I wish every child could have—being outside without technology and learning to be responsible for oneself and for the well-being of the community, with the kind and patient support of instructors who are knowledgeable and fun-loving. In Zev’s own words: “I learned that I can just be myself and that there are people out there who will like me for who I am.” Since coming home, Zev is more willing to take responsibility for himself and for other things that need to be done in the house. He is better at self-regulation. He is more willing to help with household chores. He is more aware that he is part of a community (a family) and needs to pitch in. Zev had the time of his life. He made terrific friends, loved being outside and away from technology (which is saying something for a kid like Zev who is REALLY into tech), and just got a chance to have fun and be silly.
