Eleanor

Instructor

Originally from Iowa City, IA, Eleanor spent the last year in Brevard, NC, working as a wilderness educator at the Outdoor Academy (her second year doing so). Previously, she worked in Morocco as a math and ESL teacher and college counselor at the Addictest Center. She’s also been an outdoor educator at Chewonki in Maine, where she led backpacking and canoeing trips. In college, Eleanor spent a few summers as a counselor at Camp Tanglefoot, a Girl Scout camp in her home state, and worked as a trip leader for Bowdoin’s outing club. Fun fact: Eleanor can speak French and Arabic!

  • Education: Bowdoin College, bachelor’s degree in mathematics
  • Certifications: Wilderness first responder, TEFL certificate, youth mental health first aid
  • Favorite outdoor memory: I went on a backpacking trip in Ecuador a few years ago, and after three days of hiking, I’ll never forget our first view of wild llamas (which we were waiting to see all trip)!
  • Favorite outdoor achievement: Finally getting the hang of catching a wave while surfing; it seems so simple, but when you grow up in the midwest, you learn not to take any ocean experiences for granted!
  • Favorite place you’ve traveled: The Moroccan sahara! Also, Alishan National Forest in Taiwan, and Lake Bled in Slovenia.
  • Favorite hobbies: I started learning how to climb and how to sew clothing! My other passions include travel, reading, the crossword, whitewater canoeing, and swimming.
  • What are you most excited for this summer? Bonding with my staff team, traveling to new places, and showing students they can accomplish so much more than they think! Also, last year I discovered so much cool new music during the long van rides, so I’m definitely stoked for that.
  • Previous Adventure Treks trips include Ultimate Northwest and Pacific Northwest Adventure
